Fireproof is the latest in the line of great films form Sherwood Pictures. We have enjoyed watching it and have learned many good principles along the way. It shows the importance of friends who give truly good advice; the principle that we need to find our lasting happiness in God; and the fact that our emotions can lead us astray.
In this film Caleb and Catherine Holt are having major struggles in their marriage. Caleb’s friend Michael gives him good advice and doesn’t give up on him. He tells Caleb: “A woman is like a rose, you treat her right and she’ll bloom. You don’t, and she’ll wilt.” We see what happens when Caleb does not follow this advice. Caleb also had his Dad who loved him enough to tell him hard things and always prayed for him and encouraged him to not quit. Caleb was blessed with friends who were a good influence in his life, and his decisions were results of their godly influence in his life. Catherine, on the other hand does not get good advice from any of her friends – except for one of the nurses at the hospital where they both work. But Catherine does not want to listen to her cautions. All her influences are offering worldly advice. Be careful who you listen to!
Another thing this film portrays is that we need to find our true happiness and joy in the Lord. Only then will we be able to love others properly. We can not depend on others to ‘make us happy.’ This only puts a huge burden on them and is doomed to failure. True love is selfless.
Marriage is a covenant not a contract. When people act on their emotions alone trouble comes. As Michael tells Caleb: “Don’t follow your heart, because it can be deceived. You’ve got to lead your heart.” Feelings often fail us.
So how does the movie end up? You’ll have to watch it yourself to find out!
