Dickens on Walking...

Way Back When-sday

"Feminism is mixed up with a muddled idea that women are free when they serve their employers, but slaves when they help their husbands."

Way Back When-sday

"I am still determined to be cheerful and happy in whatever situation I may be; for I have also learned from experience that the greater part of our happiness or misery depends on our dispositions and not on our circumstances.  We carry the seeds of the one or the other about with us in our minds, wherever we go."

Housekeeping

"To the contemporary mind, the idea that happiness depends on good housekeeping might seem quaint or odd. A century or two ago, and in fact until the past few decades, it was taken for granted, and the quality of housekeeping was not beneath the attention of such great novelists as Jane Austen and Leo Tolstoy."
-Cheryl Mendelson, from: Home Comforts: The Art & Science of Keeping House

Way Back When-sday

‎ "Take this rule: whatever weakens your reason, impairs the tenderness of your conscience, obscures your sense of God, or takes off your relish of spiritual things; in short, whatever increases the strength and authority of your body over your mind, that thing is sin to you, however innocent it may be in itself."

....More in Number....

When we were at the ocean last month I was amazed at how fine the sand was. It brought to mind this verse in Psalms about the thoughts of God towards me His child, being more in number than the sand! What an amazing thought!

"How precious also are Your thoughts to me O God! How great is the sum of them!

If I should count them, they would be more in number than the sand..." Psalm 139:17-18

"Nothing can surpass in number the grains of sand which belt the main ocean and all the minor seas. The task of counting God's thoughts of love would be a never-ending one. If we should attempt the reckoning we must necessarily fail, for the infinite falls not within the line of our feeble intellect. Even could we count the sands on the sea-shore, we should not then be able to number God's thoughts, for they are "more in number than the sand." This is not the hyperbole of poetry, but the solid fact of inspired statement: God thinks upon us infinitely: there is a limit to the act of creation, but not to the might of divine love."

Way Back When-sday

Queen Victoria on "Women's Rights"
"I am most anxious to enlist everyone who can speak or write to join in checking this mad, wicked folly of "Women's Rights," with all its attendant horrors, on which her poor feeble sex is bent, forgetting every sense of womanly feelings and propriety. Feminists ought to get a good whipping. Were woman to "unsex" themselves by claiming equality with men, they would become the most hateful, heathen and disgusting of beings and would surely perish without male protection. I love peace and quiet, I hate politics and turmoil. We women are not made for governing, and if we are good women, we must dislike these masculine occupations."
~ Queen Victoria, 1870

Anchored In Christ’s Hands

I want you to know the length and breadth of your portion in Christ. I want you to understand the full amount of the treasure to which faith in Jesus entitles you. You have found out that you are a great sinner. Thank God for that. You have fled to Christ for pardon and peace with God. Thank God for that. You have committed yourself to Jesus for time and eternity – you have no hope but in Christ’s blood, Christ’s righteousness, Christ’s mediation, Christ’s daily all-persevering intercession. Thank God for that. Your heart’s desire and prayer is to be holy in all manner of conversation. Thank God for that. But oh, lay hold upon the glorious truth – that believing on Jesus you shall never perish, you shall never be cast away, you shall never fall away! It is written for you as well as for the apostles, "My sheep shall never perish."

Small Things Done Well

Do you see a man who excels in his work? He will stand before kings; he will not stand before unknown men. Proverbs 22:29

"To excel in our work, we must do the small things well because it is in doing the small things well that we achieve greater things."
- Jim Ryun

My Hope...

"My hope lives not because I am a sinner, but because I am a sinner for whom Christ died. My trust is not that I am holy, but that being unholy, He is my righteousness. My faith rests not upon what I am, or shall be, or feel, or know, but in what Christ is, in what He has done, and what He is now doing for me."

~C.H. Spurgeon

He is Risen!

“..Do not be afraid; I am the First and the Last. I am He who lives, and was dead, and behold, I am alive forevermore. Amen.

And have the keys of hell and of death.”

Revelation 1:17b-18

“He lives, He lives, Christ Jesus lives today!

He walks with me and talks with me along life’s narrow way.

He lives, He lives, Salvation to impart!

You ask me how I know He lives? He lives within my heart!”

~ Alfred H. Ackley, 1887-1960

The Stars Also...

"Then God said, "Let there be lights in the firmament of the heavens to divide the day from the night; and let them be for signs and seasons, and for days and years; and let them be for lights in the firmament of the heavens to give light on the earth"; and it was so. Then God made two great lights: the greater light to rule the day, and the lesser light to rule the night. He made the stars also."
Genesis 1:14-16

The stars are mentioned in the creation account almost in an "Oh, by the way.." manner, but they are truly mind-boggling! We recently saw AIG's planetarium show on DVD called Created Cosmos. (I would highly recommend it, by the way.) It really put life in perspective and made me so grateful for a God who created all this vast universe and yet cares about each one of us on this little planet called Earth among billions of stars and galaxies!
Truly He is a great and awesome God!

Way Back When-sday

It's that wonderful old-fashioned idea that others come first and you come second. This was the whole ethic by which I was brought up. Others matter more than you do, so 'don't fuss, dear; get on with it.'
