Yesterday we had the privilege of hearing our neighbor's brother-in-law Pastor Mihuta from Romania, speak at church. (He does not speak very much English at all so he had to have a translator.) He spoke about faith from Matthew 8: 5-13.
"Now when Jesus had entered Capernaum, a centurion came to Him, pleading with Him, saying, "Lord, my servant is lying at home paralyzed, dreadfully tormented." And Jesus said to him, "I will come and heal him." The centurion answered and said, "Lord, I am not worthy that You should come under my roof. But only speak a word and my servant will be healed. For I also am a man under authority, having soldiers under me. And I say to this one, 'Go,' and he goes; and to another, 'Come,' and he comes; and to my servant, 'Do this,' and he does it." When Jesus heard it, He marveled and said to those who followed, "Assuredly, I say to you, I have not found such great faith, not even in Israel! And I say to you that many will come from east and west and sit down with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob in the kingdom of heaven. But the sons of the kingdom will be cast out into outer darkness. There will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.' Then Jesus said to the centurion, "Go your way; and as you believed, so let it be done for you. "And his servant was healed that same hour.

Here are some of my notes:
You cannot truly love if you do not have faith first.
Only two people in the Bible are praised for their faith; this Centurion and the Canaanite woman - both were Gentiles. The Canaanite woman appealed to Jesus. He appreciates great faith and praises it: Matt 15:28 Then Jesus answered and said to her, "O woman, great is your faith! Let is be to you as you desire." And her daughter was healed from that very hour.
A Great Faith...
1. ...comes closer to God.
2. ... appeals to God - prayer -
continually talk to God
Blind Bartemeus called out to the Lord and did not give up.
Psalm 34:6 "This poor man cried out, and the Lord heard him, and delivered him out of all his troubles. "
3. ...is anchored in the word of God.
The centurion had heard about the power of God. What ever God promises He does.
We are eternally secure. If Satan could take us out of God's hand then he is stronger than God.
4. ...has a deep humility.
"I am not worthy to have You under my roof"
Faith is never proud. faith looks toward God and is always interested in God's plan.
John 7:38 "He who believes in Me, as the scripture has said, out of his heart will flow rivers of living water."
"Faith occupies the position of a channel or conduit pipe. Grace is the fountain and the stream; faith is the aqueduct along which the flood of mercy flows down to refresh the thirsty sons of men. It is a great pity when the aqueduct is broken. It is a sad sight to see around Rome the many noble aqueducts which no longer convey water into the city, because the arches are broken and the marvelous structures are in ruins. The aqueduct must be kept entire to convey the current; and, even so, faith must be true and sound, leading right up to God and coming right down to ourselves, that it may become a serviceable channel of mercy to our souls."

My notes just don't do justice to the sermon...
